絣魔法 Kasuri Mahou

$220.00

Japanese,  Early Showa Period Vintage Kimono
This kimono displays the magical ingenuity of Showa era Japanese weavers. Thin stripes of black and pink threads are lain side by side, letting their contrast produce a shifting moiré of meisen silk. Upon this background, the kasuri technique, although labor-intensive, allowed the weaver to work with both warp and weft, creating a supple lace of abstract patterns that show both western and Japanese influence.

Vintage and antique kimono are made with all-natural materials and fabrics. Thus, even unused vintage kimono will show signs of age; in fact, the presence of these markers can be used to assess a kimono’s authenticity.  Liners may have stains or yellowing from oxidation of the fibers or glue. Some dyes may slightly change in hue or value. These are not defects; therefore, we omit mentioning them unless they are cosmetically significant.

We provide grades for each kimono. However, grades should only be used as a general indicator of quality. As each kimono experiences wear differently, please examine the pictures and descriptions, and if you have questions, please contact us.

One major difference between buying vintage or antique kimono and modern garments is that vintage or antique kimono are usually unlabeled.  We do our best, but sometimes, it is difficult to identify materials and fabrics. Please understand if we cannot provide such information on a particular item.

Buying a kimono can be a momentous time in one’s life, and we wish to give you a happy and worry-free buying experience. Therefore, we inspect every item carefully before we give it a grade. We provide descriptions and close-ups of significant spots or stains we find. However, in case we miss something, please understand, and do not hesitate to contact us if you have further concerns.

Cleaning
For best results, all kimono should be taken to a reputable dry cleaner. If necessary, cotton kimono may be washed on gentle cycle in a net for delicates.
